The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) continues to shine as an effective and increasingly popular initiative in the UK, promoting the adoption of greener heating technologies. Since the beginning, the scheme has received an impressive *45,932 voucher applications resulting in 38,938 vouchers issued and 28,596 redemptions paid, with 96% directed towards Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) installations. Clearly, Air Source Heat Pumps are stealing the spotlight.

Grants and incentives

By the end of June 2024, the scheme had issued a remarkable *vouchers, marking a significant increase from the previous year, demonstrating its growing momentum and effectiveness.

Surge in applications

There has been a significant surge in overall applications, with *2,687 submitted across various heating technologies in June 2024.  This is a large increase of the number of applications received June 2023. This growing interest showcases the increase in awareness and acceptance of sustainable heating among homeowners and property developers.

Financial aspects

Financial considerations are a crucial aspect of the scheme. The *median cost of ASHP installations since the scheme’s launch stands at , inclusive of grant support. This cost is relatively affordable, especially when considering the long-term energy savings and environmental benefits associated with ASHP technology. In comparison, Ground Source

Heat Pumps (GSHPs) have recorded a *higher median cost of £25,000, with shared ground loop GSHPs averaging £21,883. These figures highlight the financial considerations that might influence the adoption rates of different types of heat pump technologies. While GSHPs represent a larger upfront investment, they offer significant efficiency and cost-saving benefits over time.

Bridging regional gaps

Despite its overall success, the scheme faces regional disparities. The North East of England recorded the fewest installations, suggesting a need for targeted outreach in this area.

Demographic insights

Demographic insights reveal that the scheme has predominantly supported installations in rural areas, which accounted for *56% of the total. This focus on rural areas is significant, as these regions often face greater challenges accessing traditional heating solutions. Additionally, *55% of the supported installations were in properties connected to the gas grid, indicating a substantial shift from conventional gas heating to more sustainable alternatives. Statistics show that rural areas have *16,067 installations of all technology types, compared to 12,529 installations in urban areas, making up 44% of the total. This is a notable trend with rural communities’ adopting more sustainable and eco-friendly heating solutions.

The BUS is playing a crucial role in transforming the UK’s heating. The substantial increase in applications and disbursements, coupled with the preference for ASHP installations, reflects a growing commitment to sustainable living. However, regional disparities and the higher costs associated with some technologies highlight areas for further improvement. As the scheme continues to evolve, it promises to boost the adoption of greener heating solutions, cut carbon emissions, and drive a more sustainable future.
